Expedio Benchmark: How Much Faster Magento Gets

We made Magento 2x faster. Here’s how we measured it, and what we found.

How we tested

We took one real merchant’s Magento store on Hyvä, with around 1,000 categories and 20,000 products, and ran two copies of it side by side on one server: one as it runs today, one on Expedio. Same data, same hardware, and no full-page cache on either, so every request had to be built by Magento itself.

We tested eight page types, from the home page to add to cart, at normal traffic and at the point where stock Magento began to struggle. In total: 162 runs and 487,115 requests, on 28 and 29 September 2026.

Our rule while building the comparison was that if an optimization would help both stores equally, we didn’t make it. The gap had to come from Expedio.

Note! The server ran on ReadyMage, scandiweb’s Magento hosting, where stock Magento already answers in 70 to 472 ms without a page cache. That’s faster than most Magento stores, so every result below comes on top of that.

Highlights

  • 2x+ faster response time on every page type at peak traffic, from 2.0x on add to cart to 25.9x on the homepage
  • 6.4x faster median response time across the eight page types, at peak traffic
  • 3x more traffic on the same server
  • 655 → 30 database queries on a full category page.

Faster at normal traffic, and even faster at peak

At a normal level of traffic, every page type answered faster on Expedio, from 1.8x on add to cart to 23.7x on the homepage.

Push the traffic up, and the gap widens. Stock Magento’s category page climbed to 400 ms at 20 requests per second, the point where it began to struggle. Expedio held the same page under 30 ms at four times that traffic.

On stock Magento, starting up takes only 15 to 20 ms per page. Most of the time goes into building the page itself, and much of that is spent fetching data piece by piece. On the homepage, stock Magento made 604 database queries per request. Expedio made 11.

The difference holds with every cache emptied too. Across 100 category pages, each opened once from cold, stock Magento took a median of 181 ms of server time, and Expedio took 57 ms, 3.2x faster.

What this benchmark doesn’t show

  • These are server response times, measured as time to first byte, not full page load in a browser.
  • One real merchant’s store was tested, with its own extensions and customizations. Results from more stores are coming.
  • Cart and checkout aren’t part of this comparison.
  • Results on shared or slower hosting weren’t measured.
